New techniques of assisted reproduction have enabled the early diagnosis of genetic diseases by studying the embryos before implantation and therefore, before pregnancy.

This has made it possible to transfer embryos that are considered healthy for genetic diseases that can be transmitted from parents to children and thus to obtain a progeny free from the disease studied.

The procedure that allows this early diagnosis is called preimplantational genetic diagnosis.
